The iPhone in question is iPhone 3GS and it is running on iOS 5 beta 4, but this post relates to all iPhone models and operating systems.

My iPhone froze and it would not boot up. It makes the usual noises when you connect it to iTunes, but you cannot see the screen, nor can you do anything about it. Sometimes it can even show you a quick preview of you home screen, but then would go back into the "wonder wheel black screen thinking mode".

I tried the usual rebooting process suggested by Apple:

1) Charge the iPhone and make sure its battery is not completely depleted (

if that does not work:

2) Try holding the sleep/wake button until the red slider appears Is iPhone not responding? If that's not helping to reset your iPhone you should press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears (

if that does not work:

3) Try updating the software (that's never the problem) or restoring the iPhone (

But you know what - neither of the above steps worked for me. Because my iPhone has a passcode, I cannot restore using iTunes, as it keeps telling me:"iTunes could not restore the iphone because it is locked with a passcode". The solution is actually quite simple:

- First plug your iPhone into your computer with iTunes running,

- Then do a forced reboot by holding the Sleep/Wake button and home screen button down for about 10 seconds.

- Once it starts rebooting let go off both buttons.

- As soon as your iPhone reboots and the Apple logo appears, press and keep holding down the home screen button while you iPhone keeps booting up.

- This forces your iPhone to boot in a recovery mode. Lo and behold,  iTunes will now be able to connect to your iPhone and you can now properly restore it.
